NBAC - Simple Implementation

I need a solution

I have an environment with a W2K8R2 Master server running 7504, and two 5220 Appliances acting as Media Servers.  I have four PC's running Windows Remote Admin Console which I want to be able to restrict the NBU access from.

I have NBU services running under the local system account on the Master Server.

After reviewing the documentation in the Security Encryption guide I see the following as being required:

1. Run bpnbaz -setupmaster on the Master Server

2. Restart NBU services on the Master

3. Add the required users to the required groups within the Access Management tab of the admin console - specifying their userid, domain etc.

4. Check the access control is set to AUTOMATIC on the Master Server

Once the above is done is that all I need to be able to restrict access by the users to the specific NBU functions ?  Do I need to run the setupmedia and setupclient in order to simply restrict access ?

Thanks,

AJ

Replication Director

I need a solution

I am looking to see if a core workflow of my backup environment can be configured in Replication Director.

Environment components:

  • Multiple Netapp filers (6280s OnTap 8.x in 7mode)
  • One Netbackup master server (Windows 2003)
  • Two Netbackup media servers (one Windows 2003 and one OLE 6)
  • LTO4 tape drives in a robotic library

Current situation:

On the primary filer I take hourly snapshots of a volume and retain them for a rolling 24; a daily snapshot is taken and retained for rolling 7 days. Nightly; I snapvault a daily snapshot to a secondary filer and keep that for 5 weeks. On a weekly schedule I backup the volume on this secondary filer to tape.

This solution is managed by many tools and there is not central console to monitor and report the end to end successes (or failures, let’s be honest). Replication Director seems to be the tool for this. Can I use it to achieve my desired result?

Desired result:

  1. Netbackup schedules and initiates the hourly and daily snapshots on the primary storage volume.
  2. Netbackup schedules and initiates the snapvault to the secondary volume on another filer nightly.
  3. Netbackup schedules and executes tape backups of the secondary volume weekly to tape.

Man that sounds like a dream come true.

Thank you in adavance interwebs for any input you offer,

Joel Delaney

System Recovery 2013 Desktop Edition Install

I need a solution

I purchased System Recovery 2013 Desktop Edition and downloaded the file.  Found that the .zip file contained an .ISO file.  Burned that to a CD.  Loaded the CD and found that this was not an installation CD,  but a recovery disk with no option to actually install any program.  The instructions do not match what I see when I run this disk.  Product manual shows me that a full application should be installed???

How do I get to the actual software install?  I don't see a setup.exe on the CD made from the .ISO.

Thanks.

Logon, Services logon accounts, and logic behind overwrite

I need a solution

So I am having a little bit of a hard time grasping what the difference is between the logon accounts (under the network menu in BE) and the services logon accounts.  If you change the credentials in the Logon account through BE I don't believe that it changes the the services log on.  Should the logon account and the services log on accounts use the same credentials?  Al,so in the log on accounts why does it specify Username and owner.  I my case the username and the owner are 2 different accounts?  Why?  I think I notice that you have to log onto BE with the owner account, for example, the logon window that comes up when you try to open BE when the BE services are stopped.

Another question is, I have a hard a time following the logic behind setting the overwrite period.  A collage of mine said that you should set your daily incremental backups to overwrite in 5 days and then set your weekly full backups to overwrite in 30 days.  This will enable you to keep 30 days of backups. I think this is incorrect, shouldn't you incremental be set to overwrite in 30 days also?  For example, If you have a file that changed once on monday, then again on thursday, a weekly backup runs on friday, if on tuesday of the following week you decide you need the document from monday you won't be able to restore it because monday's media is already over written.  Correct?

One final question, I learned in another one of my posts that you can not have 2 versions of BE installed on a single machine.  However can you install BE on a machine that does not have BE on it and install agents on machines that have another version of BE on it.  Right now each of our 6 servers are acting as their own media server, we will be purchasing BE 2012 sometime this week and our current backups are in complete disarray.  I would like to avoid migrating the exiting data to the new version of BE, however I cant go with out any backups.

Ubunt 12.10 with RMAL/RALUS ( from Sym Be CD) + Symantec BE 2010 R3

I need a solution

Hi all ,

I'm testing VTL in a ESX environment.

This  is my scenario:

- Windows Server 2003 R2 x64

- Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3

- Linux Server  with Ubuntu 12.10  / 64 Bit

I followed symantec article to install RALUS on the UBUNTU SERVER . Installation was successfull and in my Symantec Backup Exec, i can see my

UBUNTU shared folder when i create a "Newjob "  under " User Defined Selections".

There is a trust relationship between the Backup Media Server ( 192.168.7.3) and Ubuntu Server (192.168.7.5) and all is working fine

the problem is that I WAS UNABLE TO CONNECT to my UBUNTU SERVER to test the VTL that i successfull created with the ./mktls

The problem is " Backup Cannot Connect to the Remote Media Server" when i add a Remote Media Server under  DEVICES - ADD REMOTE MEDIA

AGENT STORAGE

How can I conncect to my VTL running on my UBUNT SERVER 12.10 ??

Where is the problem .

Thanks all for the answers

Problem doing a restore with a tape from another library.

I need a solution

Ok, so here is the situation.

My envirironment is like this:

1 master server - 1 tape library

1 media server in a remote location - 1 tape library

1 media server in another remote location - 1 storage unit

Now, I took a tape from my media server and inserted it in the library attached to my master server.

When I try to do a restore, it will not process the tape. I get the following:

11/03/2013 01:00:52 p.m. - Info bpbrm(pid=7352) start tar32 on client
11/03/2013 01:00:52 p.m. - Info tar32(pid=9449) Restore started.
11/03/2013 01:00:52 p.m. - connected; connect time: 00:00:04
11/03/2013 01:01:02 p.m. - awaiting resource HPZ974 A pending request has been generated for this resource request.
Operator action may be required. Pending Action: No action.,

Volume Group: 000_00000_TLD, Action Acs: N/A, Action Lsm: N/A

Not sure if it is still trying to fetch the tape in the media server or what, but I am pretty stuck in here.
Any ideas?

Is there a way to see what a tape contains by Job Name? If so... How?

I only have a dozen jobs set up at the moment, but i would like to look on a tape and see what jobs it was used for?

Its probably really simple but i just cant find it.

All,

We are currently using the HP-UX 11.31 IA64 as our NBU master platform. But we have heard Symantec is going to stop HP-UX support as master soon. We are thinking to move our master to Linux or even Windows 2008. What is your recommation according to your experience? I perfer RHEL if it is solid with Netbackup.

thanks in advance!

NBU 7.1

Have a duplication from SLP that keeps coming back.  I've tried various nbstutil commands (cancel, inactive, etc) from master and media.  Nothing fixes it.  Same problem occured in January.  Can't find the command I used then to kill it.  I'd rather not bring down the services to fix the problem.

hello friends, my view at this time is;

about how I could configure the Managed Backup Exec so you can restore the backup of the CASO and also you can store them in its own disk storage. Recommendations, is on a fiber, will there be bandwidth problems? Is it advisable in this type of connection? Attached is a picture of how this distribution.
